Big Bang at School case studies

See it in action

Need inspiration for your Big Bang at School event? Wondering what the day could look like in action? Explore our example case studies on previous Big Bang at School events to see what other schools have delivered in the past.

Whether you are looking to run a careers fair style day, or a carousel of events, here you can find ideas and inspiration to support your planning.

William Perkin CofE School

An example of a themed carousel event.

  • model: carousel

  • event date: 2nd May 2025

  • student reach: 1,300 young people in KS3 and KS4

This fair is a carousel styled event with numerous activities including a keynote assembly from Oxford University, hands on workshops showcasing careers in STEM and a show by the Royal Institution. The theme this year was “All the Small Things” which includes exciting activities around the science and engineering of the small. Think cells, atoms, viruses and stardust.

Keynote speakers: Dr Rebecca Jeffery from Oxford University (Microbiology) and Professor Ray Owens from Oxford University (Molecular Biology)

Assembly show: Royal Institution (Super Cells)

Workshops: Animals UK, Centre of the Cell (Snot, Sick and Scabs), University of West London (Little Numbers), University of West London (Neuroscience in Sport), University of West London (Microbial Metabolism), University of West London (Stardust), MRC Lab of Medical Sciences (Microbiology), Synthoma (Microbiology), London School of Health and Tropical Medicine (Biology of Malaria), Canal & River Trust (Ecology of Waterways), Harbour Energy (Energy), Imperial College (Atomic Chemistry), Sainsbury Wellcome Centre: (Neutrons)

EUK Education provided the school with a £650 bursary and linked them to free outreach activities.

This event is a great example of how a school can combine an assembly show, talks and numerous workshops into a carousel day and fit the activities into a STEM-inspired theme.

Sarah Bonnell School

An example of a carousel style event.

  • model: carousel

  • event date: 5th March 2025

  • student reach: all of year 7, around 1,300 young people

This was a carousel style event which involved a rotation of activities throughout school periods across a timetable. The school combined The Big Bang at School event with International Women’s Day to create a IWD x STEM crossover day.

Assembly show: All year 7s attended the International Women’s Day assembly which celebrated achievements of women in STEM from school’s alumni, including the first RAF Military Pharmacist.

Hands-on Workshops:

  • The Big Bang Challenge, AI Design

  • Medical Mavericks

  • Planetarium 360 Immersive experience

  • Sublime Science

  • ZooLab Biomimicry Workshop

  • SPITE Queen Mary University of London

  • Bracelet Making for International Women’s Day

EUK Education's £650 bursary helped secure some of the external content that amounted to £4,000 in total.

This event was a great example of how a school can combine their Big Bang at School event with International Women’s Day to celebrate inspirational women in STEM. Sarah Bonnell School is an all-girls school, so this theme enhanced the message of encouraging young girls to pursue careers in STEM.

Leyton Sixth Form College

An example of a fair style event.

  • model: fair show floor style

  • event date: 29th April 2025

  • student reach: 700 KS3 from 14 local schools

This Fair is a show floor style event with numerous hands-on activities from companies, universities and a peer-to-peer approach with college students representing STEM departments. Local schools were invited to attend the fair and follow the careers trail to interact with stand members and get inspired about STEM careers.

Careers: RAF, City Robotics, NHS Barts Trust, Department of Education

Universities: Teesside University, Staffordshire University, University of the Arts London (Design), UCL (Chemical Engineering), Canterbury Christ Church University, Queen Mary, University London, University of Essex, Kingston University, London Met, University of Newcastle

Peer-to-Peer student stands: Media, Business, Engineering and IT, Applied Science, Chemistry, Textiles, 3D Design. Physics

Career Trail: to link the activities together under one narrative

EUK Education did not provide this school with a bursary in 2024/25. However, we linked them to free outreach networks, offered event planning support and supplied free career resources.

This event is a great example of how a school can deliver an impactful careers fair style event, with hands-on activities on the stalls, and utilise older students for peer-peer support. It is also an example of how you can engage external schools to expand the reach of your event to your local community.

Roehampton Gate School

An example of a Big Bang at School in a SEND school.

  • model: carousel

  • event date: April 2025

  • student reach: 45 young people

This fair was a carousel-style event with 3 activities. The event was adapted for a SEND school environment, which involved several students with 1-2-1 teachers and shorter, hands-on and contextualised interventions.

Hands-on activities: Aveea delivered their hands-on Spehro Coding activity, Oobleck Chemistry making activity and Lego Spike Engineering and Coding activity.

Careers talk: STEM Ambassador volunteer

Outdoors show: Coda Falconry delivered a live show outside with their birds of prey and encouraged students to ask questions with the facilitators in a FAQ session.

The Big Bang at School Team connected the school to Aveea, who tailored the activity workshop package for the school and students. The EUK Education £650 bursary supported the school to book the external workshops (Aveea and the Birds of Prey), which allowed teachers time to experience the activities alongside the students and focus on EHCP behaviours and teamworking skills.

Highgate Hill House

An example of a rural / SEND school.

  • model: carousel

  • event date: May 2026

  • student reach: 45 young people

This was a week dedicated to a range of STEAM activities, where students engaged in hands-on, interdisciplinary activities exploring green careers, sustainability and climate science.

Hands-On STEAM Learning: Experiments, data collection, and creative tasks bring weather science to life.

  • science: rain gauge experiment and weather journal, Making a water cycle in a bag

  • technology: weather apps and digital chart

  • engineering: building wind-powered cars and storm-resistant structures

  • art: weather collage and cloud art, weather poetry and stories

  • maths: Temperature graphs and rainfall analysis, wind direction mapping

Career awareness: Students see links between classroom activities and future green careers addressing climate change and sustainability.

Inclusion and diversity: Highlighting neurodiverse role models demonstrates that everyone can contribute to science, technology, and creative problem-solving.

Cross-curricular skills: Combines observation, maths, engineering, arts, and communication skills, aligned with real-world application.

The EUK Education bursary of £650 supported the school to purchase materials needed for the activities.

This is a great example of delivering a range of hands-on cross-curricular activities throughout the week to encourage creativity, foster curiosity and develop practical skills. Through using neurodiverse role models and linking classroom activities to future green careers, this school highlighted real-world career opportunities and celebrated diversity for their learners.

“Support was provided throughout and the Big Bang put me in contact with the outreach coordinator who ran a fantastic sessions for our KS5 students allowing them to partake in our British Science Week event.”
