A new report on transforming future careers

We’re proud to have partnered with Mediaplanet on their new report looking at what the future holds for the UK workplace.

Two engineers at work. They stand next to each other both facing a monitor and keyboard. One has a clipboard, one is using the controls and the keyboard of the machine in front of them.

You may have noticed in today’s Guardian a pull-out report called ‘Workforce Transformation and Your Future Career’. But don’t worry if you didn’t get hold of a copy, it’s available free online.

It’s a wide-ranging report looking at all aspects of the future UK workforce, and features a contribution from our CEO, Dr Hilary Leevers. Her article, Embracing diversity in engineering and technology, is a clarion call for diversity.

There’s real momentum across engineering and technology to increase diversity and make sure everyone, especially girls, can aspire to and access these careers. Creativity, problem solving, communication and teamwork are as important as digital and technical skills.

So we need students of all genders and backgrounds to consider careers in the engineering and technology sector in the future. Around a fifth of jobs in the UK are in engineering and technology and there are huge workforce shortages. The UK will need hundreds of thousands more engineers and technologists by 2030, especially to meet net zero targets.

Hilary says: “We need people from a wide range of backgrounds that bring diverse skills, ways of thinking and experiences to enhance productivity and innovation.”

At present women make up only 17% of the engineering and technology workforce, and are the most underrepresented group. Skills are more in demand than ever and career prospects for people from all backgrounds are excellent.
