Cybersecurity and Cryptography Workshop
Engage your students with a hands-on cryptography workshop that turns code-breaking into an exciting, real-world challenge while building essential cybersecurity skills.

Overview
Cryptography is a vital discipline in securing online communications and lies at the heart of modern cybersecurity practices. This workshop is the perfect first step for students to explore this fascinating application of computer science in the digital age. With cybersecurity professionals in high demand, this experience could even spark the beginning of a rewarding, well-paid career!
In this interactive session, children work collaboratively to investigate clues and apply cybersecurity techniques to crack a digital safe. Along the way, they gain practical skills and insights into the world of cryptography.
Students will:
- Learn about the historical and modern importance of cryptography in protecting communications, including online security.
- Explore Caesar Shifts and other simple encryption techniques, practising how to encrypt and decrypt messages on paper.
- Use a bespoke Hyett Education programme to encrypt and decrypt messages and even create simple pixel art images.
- Understand why computers are so efficient at encryption and decryption, and discuss the potential risks associated with this.
- Consider the implications for choosing strong passwords and protecting their own online accounts.
The workshop culminates in an exciting team-based code-breaking challenge set within one of several bespoke scenarios, giving students the chance to apply everything they’ve learned in a fun, competitive environment.
